Translation technology

What’s under the hood? We work with the latest translation technology.

The skilled human linguists at the centre of our operation are assisted by an array of technologies that deliver real benefits to our clients. Similarly, our project managers are supported by technology that creates a secure environment for all projects.

We continually update our translation technology, but never for the sake of it. First and foremost, our technology is there to improve our service provision. Our ongoing search for cutting-edge tools enables us to improve quality, reduce cost and speed up turnaround times.

We are partnered with the leading makers of translation software SDL and Kilgray, who make Studio and memoQ respectively. This enables us to work with new technologies as they emerge, giving you confidence that our working practices are state of the art.

We keep up-to-date with the latest developments in translation technology. Whilst we don’t necessarily need all of the technology that is available, we are aware of it and are ready to deploy it when required.

Here is a brief tour of what we have on-board:

CAT tools

Computer-assisted translation software, distinct from machine translation, enables translators to work on translations in a systematic fashion, supported by translation memory and terminology tools. See the File Journey on our homepage to see how CAT tools work.

Centralised Translation Memories

A translation memory (TM) is simply a database that stores human translations for reuse. We create discrete memories that are client and language pair specific, and are stored and maintained securely, both locally and in the cloud. Using a TM speeds up the translation process whilst improving consistency. These features promote quality whilst generating significant savings for our clients.

Translation Management System

Our cloud-based platform enables project managers and linguists to work together in a secure environment.

Client portal

Our cloud-based platform that enables clients to request quotes, approve translations, upload/download documents, access their previous translations and see live updates. (Currently in development)

Multi-Term

Terminology management technology providing one central location to store and manage preferred terms for deployment across projects, enabling total consistency across all translated content for any given client or language pair.

Content filters

We always aim to be compatible with the file formats we are presented with. Our tools cope with a wide range of file types and enable us to isolate content for translation using CAT tools and translation memory. Working with this automation minimises the human error inherent in manual processes and delivers all the benefits of CAT tools.

Machine translation engines

We use a range of neural machine translation engines to translate content rapidly at a fraction of the cost of human translation. These MT engines can be customised from existing translation memory assets to enable pre-translation ready for human post-editing. MT dramatically boosts daily output but produces lower quality translations that we only recommend for particular scenarios.

Alignment tools

Tools that create translation memories from previously translated content in an automated fashion. This enables us to create memories for clients with existing bilingual content in order to receive savings from their first project with The Word Hub.

Automated bilingual review

Generation of bilingual Microsoft Word documents for client review. These documents can then be used to update translation memories and also output final translated documents in the original native software without any cumbersome manual steps.

Optical Character Recognition

Use of sophisticated optical character recognition (OCR) enables us to generate editable documents ready for translation from otherwise unusable documents. This allows us to access as much content as possible for use in CAT tools, maximising savings and consistency.
